Welcome to the MBMS Music Department

Music is a social activity that everyone can take part in. This is at the core of the music curriculum at Marden Bridge. Our aim is to not only teach the children the fundamentals of music but to also help build their interpersonal skills, their confidence and their problem solving skills, so that they are able to work collaboratively with others and become a more well rounded young person.

Our music curriculum aims to give pupils a long term grounding in core musical and social skills, that will allow them to work collaboratively with one another to create music that they enjoy, become confident in themselves as individuals and performers and to foster a love for music that will last a lifetime.

The curriculum at MBMS is also designed to allow pupils to slowly embed the core skills needed to be a successful musician.

In line with the National Curriculum, and the National Plan for Music, our curriculum aims to enable all children and young people to learn to sing, play an instrument and create music together, and have the opportunity to progress their musical interests and talents... All pupils receive 1 hour of timetabled music lessons every week, delivered by a music specialist. Pupils are taught a wide range of genres and styles, as well as developing their performance skills on a large selection of instruments, such as keyboards, ukuleles, pCornets and Djembes.

Pupils also have access to a broad range of extracurricular music making activities, which all pupils, regardless of ability, are encouraged to join in. They can access a wide range of instrumental teaching via peripatetic staff who deliver guitar, keyboard/piano, woodwind (including recorder) and strings, lessons to pupils, both individually or in small groups settings.

Through use of the  Musical Futures approach which believes that,

‘ ... music learning is most effective when young people are making music, and when their existing passion for music is reflected and built upon...',

we aim to engage pupils by teaching an ambitious curriculum that places practical music making at its core and aims to continually build on skills they already have and puts the following Musical Futures principles at the heart of our music making:

        Explain Later
We Get Better as We Play
        Show Don’t Tell

By the time our students leave Marden Bridge Middle School, the aim is for them to be more confident in themselves as individuals and be musical risk takers and collaborative learners.
