Open Day 2020

Letters to Year 4

Letter writing image

These pages contain letters written by last year's year 5 students at Marden Bridge to all the Year 4 pupils who may join us next year.

The letters on this first page don't tell us which first school our students came from but others are listed by first school in the menu.

We are sure that they will offer some useful guidance, advice and reassurance.

Dear year 4 pupil,

I am a year 5 pupil in Marden Bridge Middle school. I wanted to write to you so i could tell you what it's like moving up to middle school if you are worried.

I came to Marden Bridge with my whole friendship group and five other boys but most people went to a different middle school. It was very nerve racking and very exciting. I remember walking into the sports hall on my first day with my friends. We were so scared. When we got to know our teacher she really helped us out and made us feel welcome.

We played games so we could get to know each other in our form class. I made a lot of friends even on the first day. At lunch before we went in we played in the backyard where only year 5s can go. Then we went in for lunch and I sat with my new friends.

My advice is if you are coming on your own go talk to new people and make new friends start a new beginning. Remember you are always welcome to Marden Bridge no matter who you are.

Welcome to Marden Bridge!

Best wishes

Dear Pupil in Year 4,

I am a pupil in year 5 at Marden Bridge Middle School, I am writing to you to tell you about moving up into middle school and to make you feel better about it.

At first I was slightly nervous about the school day but it didn’t take me long to become used to it. You are given a timetable from your form teacher and you stick to it through the whole of year 5 but it changes when you go up a year (there are 5 lessons instead of 4 that you might be used to).

Don’t be nervous about the older children that are already in Marden Bridge because they are all welcoming and you will be given a year 8 ‘buddy’ which will show you around the school for the first couple of weeks. There are a lot of different clubs to join and enjoy such as; hockey, badminton, an art club and even time to catch up on homework!

Making new friends is always a worrying situation whoever you are and however old you may be but don't be upset if it doesn't happen straight away as everyone is feeling the same and it might just take time.

Year 5 for me has been enjoyable. I have learnt new things and met new friends. I have joined hockey (on a Thursday after school) and we as a team play other schools around the area which is very fun. I.T (Information Technology) is also really exciting because you get to play certain games on the computer with your friends.

My favourite thing about middle school is the breaks that you get during the school day (11:15-11:30am and 12:30-1:30pm) because you can socialise with friends and catch up. The lessons that I like are Maths and History - what are yours?

My message to you would be do not be nervous or frightened and just have a good time.

Welcome to Marden Bridge!

Best wishes,

Dear Year 4 pupil,

I am a pupil in year 5 in Marden Bridge Middle School and I have decided to write you a letter about coming to MBMS. I hope this letter makes you feel less scared about coming.

When I came, I was very lucky to be with my friends which I was very happy about but on my first day they were all sick so I was by myself. It was quite sad but my teacher did games with us that were about getting to know each other. One game was you had a sheet and you needed to find people that liked the things on the sheet or it was when someone was born and that helped me make a lot of friends.

My advice would not to be scared if you are coming. However if you are not scared you will make a lot of new friends. You will also have more fun on that first day. But if you are scared about making friends, you shouldn't be, because everyone is very kind.

If you want my opinion about how middle school is I would say it is great fun and exciting. However, it can be a bit tiring when you do a lot of work.

Also the good things about middle school is that you get to be very independent and there are some funny lessons.

Welcome to MBMS

Best wishes,

Dear Year 4 Pupil,

I am writing this letter to help with any worries you might have about leaving first school and going to MBMS. I am just about to finish Year 5 and I’m sure this time last year I had the same worries as you. Hopefully, by the time you have finished reading this letter some of the worries will have disappeared.

The lessons at MBMS are fun. You will move around classrooms and have different teachers for each subject. The way they teach is fun and there are more new subjects (DT and Life Studies.) You also do more work on the computers.

There are loads of clubs at lunchtime and after school. There are a lot of sports clubs (Hockey, Netball, Football, Dance, Basketball and lots more.) You get to play matches against other schools. There are also non sport clubs (Relaxation, Music, Samba Drums, Art, Choir and lots more.) Everyone is always welcome at the clubs and they are good because different year groups mix.

My advice to you would be to trust the teachers. Don’t overthink things and be pro-active. Try lots of clubs as this is a good way to make new friends. Don’t be too worried as you have a buddy who is always there to help, don’t be afraid to ask them for help.

When I first started at MBMS I was very unsure and shy. MBMS has helped my confidence grow and I really enjoy going there and I’m sure you will too.

From Pupil in 5FL.

Dear Pupil in Year 4,

Hello! I am a pupil in Year 5 at Marden Bridge Middle School and I wanted to write to you to tell you what moving up to middle school is like and helping you take one step ahead if you are feeling at all worried or scared.

I came to Marden Bridge with a few other friends from first school so I would know a few people there. The main things that were worrying me were that I wouldn’t know anyone and I was worried that it would be difficult to make friends.

On the first day, I was really apprehensive and quiet. I felt scared because only about two of my old classmates were in my new class. But my teacher was really nice and helped me feel better about everything. We played different ‘getting to know you’ games, so I managed to meet lots of people in my class. I also joined Drama Club (probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made) and have made friends there too. Now I have friends that I have met from lots of different first schools and also still see my first school friends when I’m not at school.

Some advice that I can give to anyone who is coming on their own to middle school is that, even in the darkest, scariest times, new people are there to guide you out of them. Welcome to Marden Bridge!

Good Luck!

Dear pupil in year 4,

I am a pupil in year 5 at Marden Bridge Middle School and I wanted to write to tell you what moving up to middle school is like and to make you feel better if you are feeling a bit worried.

I came from my first school with some of my friends but have made a few more new friends. But the main reason I was worried was I didn't know most of the people and didn’t know if they were nice or not and thought it would be hard to make new friends.

On the first day, I was a bit worried and scared because I had only been to one school but the teachers and some pupils were very nice and helped me. Also, me and my friends from first school played some games to get used to the new school. At lunch time, I always have packed lunch and then go play football on the astro turf. This is a great way to play with your friends and to make new friends and there are lots of different clubs to take part in.

Some advice to those who are worried or nervous or if you're coming alone. The teachers are nice and the pupils are nice, you will have an amazing time.

Welcome to marden bridge!

Best wishes,

A pupil in 5CC

Dear year 4 pupil,

I know it can be hard dealing with the hard transition of first school to middle school. I can assure you that everything is going to be ok, trust me because you will make friends here. There are so many clubs to choose from too! If there is anything wrong, just talk to your form teacher.

Always bring stationery with you. Bring a backpack or any kind of bag with you. You are going to need it because you will be carrying a lot of items with you but you can leave things on your peg.

On the first day, I was excited about coming to Marden Bridge, you should try to be too! If you are nervous then that's alright. There are plenty of kind people to help you fit right in!

Some advice too, try to follow the rules as much as possible. It will all be okay in the end.

Best hopes,

A pupil in 5CC
